Large crowds of Apple faithful braved yesterday’s Joburg thunderstorm to patiently wait to be one of the first few in the country to get their hands on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Vodacom hosted a small private party with some of South Africa’s hottest names in attendance at their Vodaworld headquarters in Midrand.

Terry Pheto, who acted in an Oscar-winning movie Tsotsi and has just wrapped up shooting for her film production Ayanda and the Mechanic, was in attendance looking gorgeous in black-and-leopard-print boots, along with Live Amp presenter Luthando Shosha, MTV base VJ Nomuzi Mabena, The Link presenter Lerato Kganyago, 5FM DJ Poppy Ntshongwana and Denise Zimba.

Comic duo Goliath and Goliath entertained the crowd and prepared them for their impending split with their old phone.

5FM DJ and radio veteran DJ Fresh rocked the crowd just before the long-awaited moment when iPhone lovers could get their hands on the devices, which have sold well in other parts of the world.

Members of the public, who had been waiting for hours, continued to queue long after the midnight launch, happily clutching their distinct white Apple boxes.

When midnight came rolling around, I expected more of a grand reveal, with choirs singing and deeply moved soon-to-be iPhone 6 owners fainting from joy, but then I remembered that the iPhone needs no introduction.
