An armed gang has robbed a supermarket in Dutywa, Eastern Cape, of a large sum of cash.

“About eight armed men entered the shop when it was already closed, but not locked.

They pointed firearms at the security guards and the owners,” said Captain Lingsile Magama.

The men hit one of the owners on the head with a firearm and demanded the keys to the safe.

They made off with a “significant” amount of cash and two cellphones.

Magama said the business was owned by two Chinese nationals, who were locked in a storage room.

The robbery happened at about 6.45pm yesterday.

In a separate incident, a man was robbed in Simunye squatter camp in Butterworth.

The man was walking on the street at 2pm yesterday when an alleged robber drew a firearm and demanded cash.

The alleged robber put his hand into the man’s pocket and took R750 from him.

The alleged robber then fled.

The man said the alleged robber was known in the community. Police expected to arrest him soon.
