Arms cache found in Boksburg

2011-01-14 07:15

Three people and a police official were arrested in Boksburg for possession of unlicensed firearms.

Two men, one of them a 70-year-old, and a 38-year-old Germiston police inspector were arrested in Vogville, said the police’s Colonel Neville Malila.

“During the operation, police confiscated seven more firearms (handguns) and one pump action shotgun, as well as several rounds of ammunition.

“Six of the firearms are legally owned and registered in the name of one of the arrested suspects, and will all be sent for ballistic investigation,” he said.

Following a tip-off, eight unlicensed firearms and 13 941 rounds of ammunition were seized in a private dwelling in Steyn Street early yesterday.

Eleven firearms were found in a small bedroom.

The owner of the house was arrested.

This brought the number of firearms confiscated in the various operations and raids yesterday to 19, and ammunition to more than 14 000 rounds.

Investigations continued and all four arrested were expected to appear in court soon on charges of the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, Malila said.
