Arms dealer wants weapons back

2012-03-15 14:31

A Pretoria arms dealer is to seek a warrant of arrest against military officials who he says are refusing to comply with a court interdict to return his weapons.

“I am planning to obtain a warrant of arrest because the weapons have not been returned,” arms dealer Johan Erasmus said.

He said he got wind that a container of his weapons being stored by the SA National Defence Force (SANDF), ahead of a display in June, was to be destroyed yesterday.

He approached the North Gauteng High Court and obtained an interim inderdict against the military. When he tried to get the weapons released to him today, officials told him they were not aware of the court’s decision.

Erasmus said he was told the weapons were going to be destroyed because he was planning to give them to the Boeremag, an Afrikaner separatist organisation. He blamed the situation on rivalry surrounding arms contracts and claimed there were military officials discrediting him to get a slice of the lucrative contracts.

It was commonplace to say the weapons were destined for the Boeremag to discredit dealers, Erasmus said.

The Cape Times reported the weapons were worth about R15 million and were attached following concerns about national security and the possibility of them being used in a coup.

Erasmus is operations manager for the Armscor-vetted and registered importer and exporter New Generation Ammunition.

The SANDF had 30 days to respond.

Comment from the SANDF could not be immediately obtained.
