Artist sculpts flirty Dutch blonde in orange mini-skirt

A struggling Johannesburg artist has cashed in on a controversial

Dutch mini-dress saga by producing an orange sculpture of a blonde flirting with

a soccer ball.

Sam Fongang, who emigrated to South Africa from Cameroon in 1996,

says that he hopes his work of art will win him a Street Artist of the Year

The sculpture is of a blonde woman wearing an orange mini-dress

standing on top of a soccer ball.

Fongang said he conceived the idea of the sculpture while at a pub

in Randburg, north of Johannesburg, when two Dutch women were arrested for

ambush marketing after dressing in orange mini-dresses they claimed they had

received as gifts from Dutch brewery Bavaria.

This was at a World Cup match

between Denmark and the Netherlands at Soccer City in Johannesburg.

Fifa accused the ladies of having been sent by the brewery, which

is not an official sponsor, to orchestrate an ambush marketing campaign during

the World Cup.

The women faced charges relating to the South African Merchandise

Marks Act before Fifa withdrew them after striking a deal with the brewery

Fongang said he hoped his sculpture would inspire an annual

exhibition of street artists.

“Street artists and vendors are an essential part of South Africa’s

rich and colourful tourism attractions,” he said.
