At least 30 killed in Uganda petrol tanker blast

2013-06-30 12:24

At least 30 people were killed in Uganda's capital when a petrol tanker exploded while they were siphoning the fuel from it, police have said.

According to Ugandan police, the fuel tanker collided with a small vehicle along a major highway in Kampala, causing a spill, the Wall Street Journal reported. Uganda police spokesman, Patrick Onyango, told Dow Jones Newswires that a fire broke out shortly afterwards, setting vehicles and people ablaze during the evening rush hour.

"More than twenty victims are in a critical condition; it is so tragic," Onyongo said.

The accident was the most deadly in the capital in recent years, according to the Wall Street Journal.
