Athletes breathe fresh air into troubled ASA

2013-04-13 20:33

Long jumper Zarck Visser was the talk of the SA Senior Championships after his leap of 8.29m catapulted the Central Gauteng Athletics athlete to the second-best-of-all-time list.

Visser not only defended his title, but his mark also beat the IAAF World Championships entry-standard mark of 8.24m.

Khotso Mokoena came second with a jump of 8.11m for a second silver medal, in succession having also lost to the 23-year-old last year.

Not to be outdone, 17-year-old Gena Lofstrand of KZN Athletics sparkled in the absence of Caster Semenya to be crowned the newest 800m champion.

Lofstrand clocked a remarkable 2:04.59 after she had led the field from start to finish.

Another highlight on the day was that of high jumper Bianca Erwee, who cleared 1.85m to join the seven others that attained the same mark during the 80s.

Rising sprinter Akani Simbini – who won the 100m and 200m at the Zone VI Under-20 Youth Games – last year, won bronze in the 200m (20.90) and the 10m (10.63).

The track and field event at the Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch, which started on Friday, was a refreshing two days for athletics, particularly after the sport was dogged by the boardroom squabbles in Athletics SA (ASA) over the past month.
