The government of Australia has welcomed the “unconditional release” of journalist Peter Greste from political detention in Egypt.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said this morning that she spoke to Greste on the telephone shortly after the Al Jazeera journalist was freed from a Cairo jail.

“He was immensely relieved and he was desperate to come home to Australia and reunite with his family, his parents, Lois and Juris, and his brother Michael, who was with him, and his other brother Andrew,” Bishop said.

“He will make his way home in his own time. He wants a bit of rest and recreation and to be reunited with friends and family as soon as possible,” the foreign minister added.

Greste was released yesterday and deported after 400 days in jail on charges of faked reporting and collaborating with the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

“As far as I’m aware it was a political decision to imprison him in the first place and a political decision to release him,” Federal Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on ABC radio.
