Awards for a cause

I attended a higher grade event on Thursday night and yes, I was more than happy to get a break from the faux kisses and hugs from entertainment industry folks.

The event, which was a Sophiatown-themed dinner held at the Sandton Convention Centre, was called Investing in the Future and Drivers of Change Awards – sounds real higher grade, right?

Basically, it was an awards ceremony to recognise the men, women and companies dedicated to improving their communities and the country through enriching the lives of those less fortunate than themselves.

There were a few celebrities there, like former Generations actress Refiloe Seseane, cabaret singer Lucia Mthiyane, MTV’s head of marketing Sylvester Chauke and Suburban Bliss actress Motshabi Tyelele.

But it was the attendance of President of Botswana Lietenant-General Seretse Khama Ian Khama, Graca Machel and one of our president’s wives, Bongi Ngema Zuma – that impressed everyone the most.

For the candlelit dinner, the starter was a petit Greek salad with chakalaka, green olive tapenade, avocado, micro greens and smoked paprika dressing – I didn’t enjoy the fusion of all those things on one plate, to be honest.

But I did love the mains of Karoo lamb served with veggies and braised lamb neck curry lasagna. I must applaud TV personality Dorren Morris for her enjoyable hosting. There was never a dull moment. And thanks to Mail & Guardian for the invite – it was great learning something at a party for a change!
