Axe murder case postponed

2011-09-27 12:19

The case of accused axe murderer Joseph Ntshongwana has been postponed yet again.

This time, his defence team wants to peruse the medical report that declared him fit to stand trial.

The 34-year-old former Blue Bulls flanker appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court this morning.

He is charged with killing three Durban men – one of whom was decapitated with an axe and whose head was found in a dustbin in a Durban suburb.

According to reports by Ntshongwana’s private psychiatrist, he suffers from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. He has been receiving treatment since 2009 and has been hospitalised in various institutions.

Ntshongwana remains in police custody.

In earlier appearances Ntshongwana appeared incoherent and bewildered, clutching a Bible.

During his last appearance in August 25, doctors who examined him while under observation at Fort Napier Hospital in Pietermaritzburg, told the court that he was of sound mental health and would be able to stand trial in the high court.
