Azapo wants Zuma rape accuser to be face of campaign

2012-05-24 07:09

The Azanian People’s Organisation (Azapo) wants President Jacob Zuma’s rape accuser to become the face of an anti-rape campaign.

“We need a face for the campaign. She took a risk against one of the most powerful people in South Africa,” Manku Noruka, the head of Azapo’s women and gender affairs department, told The Star newspaper.

The woman, only ever identified as Khwezi, and the daughter of one of Zuma’s friends, accused Zuma of rape, but he was acquitted in May 2006. She then left the country.

Azapo deputy national spokesperson Funani kaNtontela said Azapo would contact South Africa’s embassy in The Netherlands to try and track her down.

Ntontela said he did not know if the woman would want to come home, but would call on Zuma to give her a guarantee of protection if she did.
