BMW 6 Series Convertible

2011-06-17 14:56

This is probably better suited for the younger corporate climber who prefers to drive herself.

A car made for the joy of driving, two models are available in the country – the 640i going for a cool R914?558 and top-of-the-range 650i worth R1?178?530.

The 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine under the 640i features TwinPower turbo technology pushing out 235kW of power and 45Nm of torque, while the 4.4-litre V8 650i model delivers 300kW of power and 600Nm torque.

If there’s one thing that stands out about the 6 Series, it’s undoubtedly its sleek and stunning looks. By far more elegant than the previous model, it still comes across rather manly with the sweeping bonnet and
sharp-edged front end, longer wheelbase and smooth lines.

The soft-top, fin-roof retracts as swiftly as it goes up. It brings noteworthy weight reductions and stows away neatly between the rear seats and the boot. It’s fully automatic and can be operated by remote control even outside the car or on the move, provided the car’s speed doesn’t exceed 40km/h.

It goes down in 19 seconds and takes 24 seconds to rise.

The “fins”, extended along the sides of the car and into the rear, enhance the elegant silhouette which sets it apart from other convertibles.

It is also available in three different colours – black, beige and the new anthracite silver-effect version.

On the inside, it is packed with technologies such as the iDrive control system which is integrated into the instrument panel. A world-first innovative item on the car is the integrated owner’s manual. By using the iDrive system, information on all the equipment details in the car can be called up on screen.

Other standard items include BiXenon headlights; the drive dynamic control system which allows the driver to choose a driving mode of comfy, sporty or normal; a multi-functional steering wheel and an electric parking brake with an auto-hold function.

The seats are lightweight leather with sun-reflective technology and are available in three versions – standard, sports or comfort. Sports seats are optional while the comfort seats come with head restraints, lumbar support and electric adjustment for thigh support. All of them feature an easy entry function that moves the seat as far forward as possible to allow easy access into the rear by the touch of a button.

The BMW 635d Convertible, launched in 2007, introduced unique highlights to this class in terms of efficiency. Back then it was the most powerful six-cylinder diesel engine with 210kW of power.

Between 2004 and last year, the first-generation 6 Series Convertible sold 49?053 units.

This latest model embodies the same traits. And although it carries some characteristics, it has evolved in terms of styling and technology but still carries the same values of an open-top, four-seater for open-air driving.
