BMW goes hybrid

2012-06-16 15:39

The BMW badge is synonymous with innovation and the German car maker has been one of the forerunners when it comes to vehicle regeneration. But it hasn’t had an ecofriendly car – until now.

Although it’s reduced its carbon footprint by about 30% over the past 17 years, the 95-year-old manufacturer launched its first hybrid model only last month.

The 5-Series range now includes the Active Hybrid 5 model and although the car is greener, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice power.

Like Lexus and Porsche’s beastly hybrid cars, this model is one of the most powerful ecofriendly cars on the market.

It has the same powerful engine found under the bonnet of the 535i model and an eight-speed automatic steptronic gearbox, but thanks to the hybrid technology it is a lot more fuel efficient and has fewer carbon emissions.

The interior is lush, with soft high-end materials, so luxury has not been compromised.

There are still the same niceties you would expect to find in a car with a BMW badge, such as privacy shades on the windows and a sunroof.

But all this ecofriendliness means it doesn’t come cheap.
