Background: Mubarak on trial

Egypt’s ousted president Hosni Mubarak went on trial in Cairo today, along with two of his sons, a former cabinet minister and six security aides. All are facing charges related to the killing of protesters and alleged corruption.

Hosni Mubarak (83)
»State president from October 1981 to February 11, when mass protests forced him from office.

» Presided over an authoritarian regime, based on the military, intelligence service, the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP) and influential business figures.

» Came to power following the assassination of president Anwar Sadat.

Gamal Mubarak (47)
» Mubarak’s son, once seen as his likely successor. He was deputy secretary-general of the NDP and head of its policies committee. He also nurtured the ties between the regime and business tycoons.

Alaa Mubarak (51)

»The oldest of the Mubarak sons is a businessman who was not actively involved in politics.

Habib al-Adli (73)

» As former interior minister, he headed the police and intelligence service, which led the crackdown on protesters under a mandate that appeared to extend from spying on citizens, repression and detention of the opposition to electoral fraud.
