Bafana face tough test against Lions

2012-02-29 14:03

Even without their best duo Senegal’s Teranga Lions are still expected to give Bafana a run for their money in tonight’s friendly at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The West Africans will be without Newcastle strikers Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse.

While Ba was overlooked for the game by the interim coaches Karim Diof and Aliou Cisse after a poor performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, Cisse withdrew due to a hamstring injury.

Bafana will also be without injury prone left back Tsepo Masilela, who nonetheless arrived in the camp carrying a hamstring injury from his Spanich La Liga club Getate CF.

But diminutive midfielder May Mahlangu believes the team has what it takes to win the game.

The Swedish player of the season is also looking to win a place in Pitso Mosimane’s team after making his international debut in January.

The two teams go into tonight’s game with their tales between their legs after a winless streak.

But Mosimane has already given excuses, in case his team does not win, saying Senegal’s participation at the Gabon and Equatorial Guinea gives them an edge over Bafana, who last played a competitive match in November against Ivory Coast.

Mosimane’s concerns have been in the striking force where Katlego Mphela and Siyabonga Nontshinga have been firing blanks at their respective clubs.

Goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, who has been out of action for about five months with a back injury, is expected to reclaim the number one spot, with Morgan Gould and Bongani Khumalo rekindling their SuperSport United partnership at the heart of defence.

The absence of Masilela means Mosimane will deploy Siboniso Gaxa on the left back while Anele Ngcongca occupies the other full back position.

Mosimane is expected to pack his midfield with five players and play Mphela as a lone striker.
Kick off is at 8.30pm.
