Bafana ranking slips

2012-02-15 11:14

Bafana Bafana’s failure to take part in the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations have cost them two places on the Fifa ranking.

But while South Africa have dropped from 56 to 58, newly-crowned African champions Zambia were the big winners – breaking into the top 50, jumping 28 places to 43rd.
The Chipolopolo have also climbed to fourth on the continent while losing finalists Ivory Coast have maintained their top position.

Co-hosts Gabon were the biggest movers after moving 46 places from 91st to 45 with bronze medallists Mali moving 25 places to 44 in the world.

It was expected that Bafana would drop their place after their failure to qualify for the tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
Pitso Mosimane’s undoing was also to downgrade Bafana’s two friendly matches against Zambia and Ghana to mere practice games.

Bafana have dropped two places on the continent to the 10th spot.

World champions Spain are still on top of the world rankings, followed by Germany who have overtaken the Netherlands.
