Bafana score easy win over Swaziland in preparation for clash with Spain

2013-11-16 10:08

South Africa warmed up for a showdown with world champions Spain by scoring two early second-half goals to set up a 3-0 win in a friendly against Swaziland.

After a goalless, overly physical opening half at a packed Somhlolo Stadium, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Bongani Zungu struck within a minute of each other.

Thabo Nthethe added a third as Bafana Bafana prepared for Tuesday’s clash with the World Cup holders and European champions in Johannesburg.

Starting with five of the Orlando Pirates side that finished as runners-up in the CAF Champions League last weekend, South Africa could have been ahead within 30 seconds.

But Kermit Erasmus nodded a cross wide from close range and Swaziland came even closer to breaking the deadlock when a Sabelo Ndzinisa shot struck the post.

Swazi toughness turned to roughness in the clash as the southern Africa neighbours, who are 122 places apart in the Fifa rankings, and the referee battled to keep tempers in check.

South Africa moved the ball much quicker from the start of the second half, nullifying the physicality of the home side on the artificial pitch at the national stadium.

Half-time substitute Zungu put Letsholonyane through to score on 48 minutes before netting himself from a long pass to effectively end the game as a contest.

When Swaziland failed to clear a free-kick, Nthethe struck a low shot into the corner in the 64th minute of a game that never reached great heights.
