Bafana set for kind 2010 draw

2009-12-02 12:31

BAFANA Bafana are likely to be drawn against New Zealand or an

Asian or North American country in the eagerly-awaited World Cup draw on Friday.

This was after the Fifa executive committee approved the procedure

of the draw with the seven top seeded countries joining South Africa as seeded

This means South Africa have avoided big guns Brazil, Spain,

Germany, Italy, England, Holland and Argentina in Pot 1.

The South African team will also play one of Uruguay, Paraguay or

Chile who are all in Pot 3 which also includes five other African teams –

Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast.

But because no two countries from the same confederation can be

pitted in the same group, neither of the African countries would be drawn

Chairperson of the World Cup Local Organising Committee (LOC) Irvin

Khoza said meeting New Zealand could pave Bafana’s passage to the second round

of the event.

Bafana beat the All Whites 2-0 in the Confederations Cup in June

and meeting them again in the World Cup will increase their chances of

qualifying for the knockout stages.

  • Pot 2 (Asia, Oceania and North/Central

America): Japan, South Korea, North Korea, Australia, New Zealand, USA, Mexico,

  • Pot 3 (Africa and South America):

Ivory Coast, Ghana, Cameroon, Nigeria, Algeria, Paraguay, Chile, Uruguay.

  • Pot 4 (Europe): France, Portugal,

Slovenia, Switzerland, Greece, Serbia, Denmark, Slovakia.
