Bail for man accused of arranging wife’s gang-rape

2014-05-06 16:39

The man accused of getting six men to rape his wife while he watched, and then raped her himself, has been granted bail of R20 000.

This is after the man was initially refused bail by a magistrate in Bethal.

The accused was arrested at his home in Bethal in February after the complainant had laid a charge of rape against him.

Magistrate Marleén de Villiers found in March that the accused had manipulated and influenced the complainant in the past and had a history of violent behaviour against his partners.

She refused to grant him bail because according to her, he constituted a flight risk and was a danger to the complainant, and because the state had a very strong case.

However, Piet du Plessis, for the accused, appealed against this ruling. On Wednesday, Judge Colleen Collis overturned the ruling and set bail for the man at R20 000.

The bail conditions require the accused to report twice a day to the police station in Randfontein, where he is living with his sister. He may not go to Bethal or make contact with the complainant.

“We are very pleased with the ruling,” said Du Plessis.

But a friend of the complainant said the ruling was a great shock to them. “At least the bail conditions are severe enough to give us some time to breathe,” she said.

The accused will again appear in court in Bethal on May 22.
