A Dobsonville woman accused of giving false information about a missing University of Johannesburg student has appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court.

Nobantu Nhlapho (19) was granted R3000 bail today and the case was postponed to October 15, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

She had been charged with defeating the ends of justice.

"If people are given a number to help the police, they should not misuse it and mislead the police," said Makhubela.

The missing UJ student, Palesa Madiba, was last seen on August 12. Scores of people have joined in the search for her.

Makhubela said Nhlapho phoned and sent text messages to police, saying she saw Madiba at a house in Dobsonville.

"We found the house had four young boy occupants. They indicated that they don't know the [missing] girl," he said.

Makhubela said police tried to phone and text the caller back to clarify the address, but she did not answer.

"We thought maybe we got the address wrong and tried to contact her."

After numerous attempts to contact her failed, police decided to trace the phone number.

Police were investigating the possibility that she might have been involved in Madiba's disappearance.
