ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete has urged African Union (AU) Commission chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to weigh up her future career options very carefully.
Dlamini-Zuma was nominated by ANC branches to return to Parliament, and there have been reports that she has accepted, but Mbete said she could not confirm these.
Speaking to City Press on the sidelines of the AU summit in Addis Ababa, where she is attending a meeting on the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), Mbete said: “[Dlamini-Zuma] has a right to get all views from branches and take it from there. Obviously, she must balance that with the reality that only a year ago she was brought here by Africa through the kind of confidence that was shown in her by quite a large number of African people.
“So she should consider the issue taking into account her own view, so I don’t think there should be a crisis about that.”
Asked whether it was a tough decision, Mbete said it was. “You have to weigh up [options] all the time.”
But Mbete did not speak about her own nomination.
Dlamini-Zuma is due to give a press conference this afternoon on the theme of the AU summit, which continues tomorrow with a two-day assembly of African heads of state.
