Bank refunds client after card fraud

A First National Bank client, Nobom Mkondweni, is elated that the bank has refunded her R9?000 that was used from her account after her bank card was cloned.

FNB media-liaison manager Bongolethu Futuse said: “Our investigation shows that this was a case of fraud. FNB has resolved to refund the customer all the money that was stolen from her account.”

Futuse said the fraudsters cloned Mkondweni’s card. He said the case had been referred to the police.

Last week Mkondweni approached Hotline, complaining that her matter had not received satisfactory attention from the bank.

She said at the end of August, she received a notification via the FNB SMS service that transactions were being made from her bank account.

“On August?27 at about 10am, while at work, I received an SMS notification that a purchase of R6?990 was being made at a Jumbo Liquor store.

“Shortly afterwards another SMS came through, showing an ATM withdrawal of R2?000. Later, another withdrawal of R300 was made.

“Just to verify, I checked in my purse and my card was neatly tucked away. I felt so sick, violated and stripped of my privacy,” Mkondweni said.

She immediately informed the FNB branch on President Street in Johannesburg.

She was asked to submit an affidavit and was told that the fraud department would investigate and get back to her.

“Although the person who attended to me was sensitive to my pain, I felt helpless because the bank could not provide me with money to pay my bills either by overdraft or personal loan. My application for a loan was denied on the basis of affordability.”
