Banyana demolish Comoros 13-0 in African Women’s Championship

The women’s national soccer team thrashed Comoros 13-0 in the first leg of the African Women’s Championship qualifier match in Moroni.

Portia Modise and Leandra Smeda scored four goals each, while Sanah Mollo registered two goals. Mamello Makhabane, Nomathemba Ntsibande and Shiwe Nogwanya slotted home a goal each.

Veteran striker Portia Modise opened the scoring for Banyana Banyana 15 minutes into the game.

The heat and artificial turf did not seem to be much of a hindrance for Vera Pauw’s charges as they continued with their dominance over Comoros.

Modise doubled the lead in the 20th minute before Leandra Smeda extended the score to three with a beautiful header from inside the box.

Mollo also registered her name on the score sheet in the first stanza before Modise made it 5-0 with minutes left before the half-time break.

Banyana Banyana scored eight goals in the second half.

“We prepared very well for the match, and I’m happy that the ladies have started finding the back of the net,” said coach Vera Pauw.

“We did not change the team, but we also gave other players a chance in the second half. We were dominating the game,” she said.

“Today was a good day for women’s football and South Africa.”

The return-leg match will be played in South Africa on the first weekend of June.
