Banyana ready for DRC

A win or a draw for Banyana Banyana will be enough to book them a place in the next round of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Women’s Championships in Equatorial Guinea.

South Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo will face off in the last Group A match at Nkoantoma Stadium this afternoon.

South Africa and the DRC have collected three points apiece from two games. Banyana are second in the log while DRC are third because of a huge goal difference as they lost 6-0 to the hosts Equatorial Guinea.

Banyana coach Joseph Mkhonza said the team was ready for the encounter.

Despite being placed second on the log, Mkhonza said they were not getting carried away.

He, however, expressed his frustration over the failure to score goals in their second match against Senegal on Wednesday, which they won 1-0.

Despite dominating in the match and creating many chances, Banyana had to settle for a narrow win as they could not manage to find a way past a defensive Senegalese side.

He said he was aware of the threat the DRC posed for his side and has warned his players not to let their guard down. But Mkhonza vowed that his side will play their natural game today.

“It’s going to be a hard game, there’s no doubt about it, but we will prepare ourselves in the same way we have planned. All players are available; we are all looking forward to the match. We need to focus on goal-scoring and I have also emphasised the importance of scoring,” he said.
