If sound at the FNB Stadium could be a measure of popularity, US President Barack Obama would have topped the list, followed by former president Thabo Mbeki, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe.

The minute their names were mentioned by the programme director, Cyril Ramaphosa, today – or their faces appeared on the big screens around the stadium – the crowd cheered and blew vuvuzelas.

When its was announced that Mugabe was among the dignitaries, Zimbabwean flags emerged from the stands, flying high.

Lydia Masango (58) from Mndeni, Soweto, said Mugabe was her president.

“Mugabe stands for what he believes in and I admire his courage. I may not agree with the way he treats people from Zimbabwe who don’t agree with him, but I love his stance on land redistribution,” she said.
