Barbie to run for president

2012-04-06 06:54

As would-be challengers to US president Barack Obama battle it out on the campaign trail, one candidate is already declared: Barbie is running for president, the Mattel toy company has announced.

Mattel will release a politician Barbie for the US campaign year, part of the “I Can Be...” series, which aims to give kids a chance to play-act different professions.

The Barbie candidates are as multiethnic as the country they would lead: the leggy politician will be available in African-American, Asian and Latina versions, a Mattel spokesperson told Forbes magazine.

Campaigning for the B Party, Barbie stands by her record and doesn’t flip-flop on her favourite colour: it’s still pink.

But she adds a little patriotic flair to her hot-pink power suit with a border and campaign button in the red, white and blue of the American flag. Her stylist, Chris Benz, has practice – he’s also dressed US first lady Michelle Obama.

And in a nod to the dignity of the office she hopes to win, this campaign year, Barbie will stand on her own two feet – for the first time in 53 years. Mattel confirms that the political neophyte can now stand unassisted in her hot-pink pumps.

The doll will go on sale tomorrow, Mattel said.
