Basketball National League officially launched

The much-anticipated Basketball National League (BNL) was officially launched in Randburg today.

League chairperson Albert Mokoena said the first match will be staged on September 27.

Five of the 11 franchises have been sold to private owners for R2 million each. The process to sell the remaining six is under way. The clubs will be divided into two conferences.

Mokoena said strict criteria were used to select the buyers.

“We looked at equity, capacity and that no foreigner can own more than 49% of a franchise,” he said.

Three of the five franchises that have been bought are based in Gauteng and one each in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

Minister of Sport and Recreation Fikile Mbalula said the start of the BNL will help put South Africa among the best basketball-playing nations on the continent.

“We must ensure players are well-equipped with education so that we don’t have them going around begging for R2 after retirement.”
