Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini is inviting unemployed social workers to register on a new database.

“The database will be used to lobby for funds to create social work posts that are required within the public service,” ministerial spokesperson Lumka Oliphant said in a statement today.

“Currently, there are 9 456 social workers in the employ of government,” she said.

The database would give the department an idea of how many social workers were in the country who were not recipients of government’s scholarship programme, said Oliphant.

“This is in response to the issue raised by communities and the media that there were qualified social workers who were unemployed.”

She said government’s 2003 draft scarce skills and policy framework recognised social work as a scarce skill, and called for the development of strategies to recruit and retain such skills.

“The National Development Plan made social work a scarce skill and indicated that 60 000 social workers would be needed by 2030 to serve our population,” said Oliphant.
