Beach bathing banned during sardine run

2010-07-24 09:02

Bathing and surfing along the Durban coastline will be banned

during the weekend for the annual sardine run.

Surfing and bathing would be dangerous because shark nets from all

bathing beaches had been removed, said the eThekwini Municipality’s head of

leisure, Christo Swart.

He said: “The shark nets have been removed as a precaution to

prevent predators such as sharks and dolphins getting caught in shark nets while

feeding on the sardines.”

Thousands of sardines swarmed along the Durban beachfront at

Suncoast Casino on Wednesday.

Swart said the banning of bathing would be in place today and

He said: “The situation will be monitored on a daily basis and

consideration to reinstall the shark net will be made.”
