Beachside dining with great vistas

2011-09-02 10:15

There are some places that just scream summer. The Grand Cafe & Beach restaurant in Cape Town is one such place.

I’m an undercover snob, so when I choose my restaurants, I always prefer them to be beyond gorgeous and not very well known. When I found this adorable little beachside restaurant in Cape Town called The Grand Cafe & Beach in Granger Bay, my first instinct was to keep it to myself.

But some things are just too awesome not to share.

The spot is adjacent to Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront but, with a gravel road, its entrance looks more like a dockside parking lot. Even the sign has been painted to make it look rusty and old.

Apparently this place is Cape Town’s first beach cafe – don’t even mention those cafes in Camps Bay.

At this cafe, you can take your shoes off after a meal and have a drink on the plush couches placed on the sand.

The sand gives the restaurant a beautiful beach look. The venue has a view of not only the sea, but of Table Bay and the yachts that occasionally pass by.

The décor is just as beautiful – romantic furnishings from Parisian cafe chairs, pink recliners, white couches, chandeliers and candelabras, nude sketches, red roses and beach umbrellas. It makes the place look extra stylish.

There’s even a bar on the sand for those who want to enjoy the
beach atmosphere.

It was still winter when I visited the establishment, but fortunately it was one of those unusually warm days, which made it a perfect experience.

You may want to get there early because if you don’t, you will have to settle for a table between all the beach umbrellas.

The bistro-style menu is positively mouthwatering. Dishes include everything from seafood, pizzas, steak and poultry to a delicious selection of vegetarian meals and a range of wines.

We quickly ordered a large bottle of expensive sparking water, a few cocktails and a very French square pizza topped with salmon, mozzarella, rocket, chives, capers and tomatoes.

I ordered a dish of queen prawns, which was served with a bit of rice on the side. I side-eyed the waiter because, really, what do i look like, a bird? I asked him to bring more rice and veggies, which he promptly did.

Most of the prices are steep (a basic pizza is R150 – have you ever?), but if you’re willing to pay to enjoy the feeling of lounging on the beach, this place is perfect.

The icing on the cake is that it has a shopping space called The Grand Gallery Boadicea (named after the famous warrior queen of the Iceni people), which stocks eclectic lifestyle items from art, resort wear and homeware to furniture, clothing accessories and imported merchandise.

I wouldn’t be surprised if this place takes over from the Camps Bay restaurants as the most popular spot to dine because not only is it stylish, it also has delicious food – two things that appeal to the Girls of the BEE Mansion and their sugar daddies.
