Beauties, brainiacs vie to be Miss SA

But they do panic when quizzed

Remember the Miss South Africa contestant who couldn’t name South Africa’s nine provinces, and thought Joburg and Cape Town were part of the list?

Lwandle Ngwenya, who was a law student up until two months ago, named Cape Town and Johannesburg as two of SA’s provinces on the reality series The Road To Miss SA.

She instantly gained the same infamy as Chris “Don’t touch me on my studio” Maroleng.

The 21-year-old is now a finalist, with a 12-to-one chance of sashaying off with the sash and crown.

When City Press quizzed her about the faux pas, she replied: “I was nervous on the day. Bridget (Masinga, the presenter) caught me as I was about to walk in to see the judges. It’s no excuse but I panicked and said that, but when she said those are cities I went back to correct myself, but that was not what the viewers saw because that whole part was edited out.”

Ngwenya is facing tough competition. The Top 12 boasts electrical engineering student Remona Moodley from Durban, medical student Rolene Strauss from Mpumalanga and Joburg’s Pinky Mathope, a metallurgy (metal science) engineering student.

Joining the brainiacs are marketing students Melinda Bam from Pretoria, the Vaal’s Thuli Sangweni
and Joburg’s Sian Schleusch; Pretoria-based model Freida du Plessis, who is a teacher; Lerato Mokoena, a tourism graduate; Caylene Marais, a life and performance coach; law student and model Tamerin Jardine; and former professional surfer turned PR officer Grace Rheeders.

They compete for the crown next Sunday at Sun City. The pageant will be broadcast live on Mzansi Magic at 5.30pm.
