A free tasting promotion for alcohol-free beer at some Gauteng polling stations had a DA party agent making beer-for-votes allegations when he saw ANC campaigners handing out bottles.

The DA agent, who didn’t want to give his name for fear of reprisal, said he saw people in ANC T-shirts handing out bottles of Bavaria alcohol-free beers, “even to kids”, urging people to “vote ANC”.

He said this happened at two polling stations in Alexandra, but he couldn’t lay a complaint because the Independent Electoral Commission presiding officers at the polling stations didn’t take kindly to opposition party agents.

“They have an attitude towards us,” he said.

Bavaria marketing manager Roger Ter Horst confirmed that the brand was doing a sampling campaign around polling stations today, but denied that it used party agents to hand out beers.

“We are sampling 0% malt drinks during the voting period. It has nothing to do with any political party,” he said.

“We anticipated long lines [at the voting stations] and because this is alcohol-free, we thought it would be good for refreshment.”

Agents were handing out free bottles and, in some cases, even a six-pack of drinks to voters.

The brand is promoting responsible alternatives to beer and soft drinks and agents were also handing out vouchers and leaflets, Ter Horst said.
