Bees Roux trial delayed

2011-09-05 09:45

The murder trial of Blue Bulls rugby player “Bees” Roux has been delayed until Wednesday this week to finalise discussions between the state and defence.

Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi postponed Roux’s trial in the High Court in Pretoria today and extended his bail of R100 000.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhanga would not confirm that the discussions included a possible plea bargain agreement. He said the discussions had been ongoing for some time, but could not be finalised in time.

“By Wednesday, we will have an indication of how the matter will be dealt with,” he said.

Roux was charged with murder after allegedly beating metro police officer Sergeant Ntshimane Johannes Mogale (38) to death in August last year.

The incident took place after Mogale pulled Roux over for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Roux said in an affidavit during his bail application he had assaulted Mogale while defending himself against theft and attempted robbery by Mogale.

He indicated that he would plead not guilty to the murder charge.A 29-year-old man was later arrested and appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates Court in connection with charges of theft and fraud relating to Roux’s credit card, which was reported missing from the scene.

The credit card was used to buy liquor, food and electrical appliances.
