Benni will throw a R100 000 party for teammates

Orlando Pirates striker Benni McCarthy plans to use his Telkom Knockout Striker of the Tournament prize money to throw a party for his teammates.

“First and foremost I’d just like to thank my teammates for the hard work, the commitment and the effort they put in every single day in training. They also made me change my attitude,” McCarthy reportedly told after receiving his award.

“Although I’m an older player, an experienced player, they made me put in the hard work and it had merit because I ended up with the striker of the tournament (award).”

The 34-year-old on-form striker, who was involved in a verbal tiff with the Bidvest Wits bench during Saturday’s Telkom Knockout final, said he would give the team a European welcoming.

“That’s how we do it in Europe, we always have Christmas parties, nice and respectable, but we have R100 000 to spend.”

He said he was a little disappointed that he only scored three goals in the tournament, losing out on the bonus prize money.

“As a striker you are never satisfied with what you end up with in goals. I always felt there were like a few games where I could have scored way more than I did, but obviously as long as I helped the team get the victory and progress to the next round, that was always our objective.

"But I am little bit disappointed because myself and my teammates let slip the possibility of me winning the R150 000 bonus!”
