A red-hot Karim Benzema fired France to their first World Cup win since 2006 as they powered their way past 10-man Honduras in Porto Alegre.

It was a controversial and tempestuous Group E fixture that saw a red card and a hotly-disputed goal which reinvigorated the goal-line technology debate.

Les Bleus, though, were full value for their three points and now top the group ahead of Switzerland on goal difference.

The Swiss came back from a goal down to beat Ecuador 2-1 at the Brasilia National Stadium in the earlier fixture.

Didier Deschamps' side survived an early onslaught from the physical Central Americans and they were unlucky not go be two goals ahead when two shots hit the crossbar with Honduras goalkeeper Noel Valladares beaten.

Los Catrachos were reduced to 10 men when Wilson Palacios was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 43rd minute when he barged into Paul Pogba, giving the French a penalty which was converted by Benzema.

The Real Madrid striker was at the heart of the second goal, which cannoned off the upright and marginally crossed the line via Valladares early in the second half.

It was a contentious decision but the goal stood nonetheless and the fight was gone from Honduras. Benzema then added a third goal in the 73rd minute to put the result beyond doubt.
