Black elite hijack race card

2009-09-12 12:25

THE race card is once again dominating explanations of situations from the Castor Semenya experience to the troubles of Cape Judge President John Hlophe and the firing of black executives from parastatals. And based on the comments of some of the elite it seems the black race is under siege and they are its defenders.

In all these instances these individuals were affected by issues that were specific to them and not their race. There were other black athletes at Berlin besides Semenya; there are many black judges who are not legally suspect and there are many black executives who are holding their positions with distinction.

It is cheap to cry racism each time someone with a black skin is caught in a situation that could have befallen any person irrespective of colour, creed and gender. It also insults the intelligence of black people that when problems affect these individuals they should necessarily affect the entire race along with them.

Moreover, this ruse reinforces the practice of many blacks who shirk responsibility or do not work hard, knowing that their black skins will serve as cover to excuse their shortcomings.

These noises about “injustices” and “racism” sharply contrast with the silence that prevails when blacks victimise one another. The destruction of black culture and morality and the endemic corruption by the current government hardly bothers these race advocates.

Also, a recent study revealed deteriorating educational standards among black tertiary students but not a word was raised to engage the issue, let alone tackle the authorities.

Winnie Madikizela-Mandela re-emerged to be embroiled in the Semenya saga. She was not prompted by genuine concern for Semenya. She merely abused the issue to polish her tarnished reputation. Scores of black girls continually drop out of school as moms and many are Aids victims yet Madikizela-Mandela, a former social worker and supposedly the mother of the nation, is mum on the issue.

Nomboniso Gosa, a black feminist and former rape victim, has written about Semenya yet she has been nonchalant about the thousands of black minors who are having babies or abortions.

The Black Lawyers Association and the advocates of “transformation” are now defending a man (Hlophe) well qualified to defend himself. Both shy away from defending helpless minors, victims of legal negligence.

Added to this indifference is the black elite’s flaunting of its material wealth and dubious prestige at the poor black masses. Few have ploughed back into their communities or former schools and fewer would tackle the growing miserable lot of their kith and kin.

The race question will honestly be dealt with only when the black elite turn inward and deal with the problems facing a deteriorating race.

Genuine racial solidarity can only be expressed through positive and productive collective self- determination. Otherwise the elite are using race to promote their class interests. ) Mabogoane is an independent analyst
