Black man at the case

The tragic shooting and death of Reeva Steenkamp on February 14 has led to heated public debates about gun ownership in South Africa.

What strikes me is that one side of the debate is dominated by a tiny minority of South Africans – white men.

The media, on the other side, is full of these white men’s angry, defensive voices proclaiming their right to own a gun as away to defend their families, homes and possessions from intruders.

I’m a young black man and statistics show that I am far more likely to be a crime victim than any white man in this nation. So I’m tired of hearing angry white men arguing that they need guns to protect themselves against violent crime.

Let us be honest. The intruder that Oscar Pistorius refers to here is not a white male, but a young black male like me. So Pistorius would, for all intents and purposes, have been the one to die from the four bullets that, unfortunately, took Reeva’s life.
