Blue-light accident driver could be charged

The driver of the car that knocked Thomas Ferreira off his motorcycle on November 5 last year could be charged on Monday.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson advocate Mthunzi Mhaga told Beeld newspaper that the police sent the investigation report to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) yesterday.

According to Beeld’s report, the driver was expected to be charged on Monday, provided the DPP had no further queries.

The speeding blue-light vehicle of Humphrey Mmemezi, Gauteng MEC for local government and housing, hit Ferreira and left him comatose, brain-injured and in need of long-term rehabilitation.

Police investigated a case of reckless or negligent driving and the dossier was handed to the senior state prosecutor at the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court in January.

It was then sent to the DPP, who returned it to the investigating officer with instructions to obtain an additional statement from Mmemezi.
