Bocelli to give World Cup a grand finale

2010-06-28 12:22

Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will take centre stage at a concert in Johannesburg to mark the closing of the Fifa World Cup.

The concert, Celebrate Africa – The Grand Finale, takes place on July 9 at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate, according to the organisers, Big Concerts and Harvey Goldsmith.

This will be Bocelli’s first performance in South Africa.

Bocelli, who has sold more than 70 million records, is known in the classical and contemporary music fields.

The organisers said there was a tradition of tenors performing at Fifa concerts, which had previously featured Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti – famously known as The Three Tenors.

Bocelli will duet with a number of other performers, including South African singer and songwriter Nianell and South African soprano Pretty Yende. – Sapa
