Boks may be out of Currie Cup

2014-02-07 11:28

Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer is keen to withdraw his players from playing in the Currie Cup semifinals and final.

According to the Volksblad website, the Bok coach wants to do this to spare his players for the gruelling Test season.

An announcement on the matter could be made soon.

This could also lead to a new rule which would see the so-called big five – Blue Bulls, Western Province, Sharks, Free State Cheetahs, Golden Lions – as well as the EP Kings be safe of their spot in the Currie Cup top flight, even if they finished in the bottom two of the proposed eight-team top division.

The Springboks hardly ever feature in the earlier rounds of the Currie Cup and only return to play in the knockout stages.
