Bolt a marvel to behold

2012-08-08 08:47

Usain Bolt is a big human being and a massive news subject to cover in any athletics meeting.

Wait till you get to see how many people want a piece of him on race day – from the fans to the media.

As a journalist among the many who wait long hours to get a sound bite from him after the event, it is essential to “book” a prime spot.

When the Jamaican blew the world and his field in 9.63 seconds on Sunday, he only arrived at the print media mixed zone two hours after his race.

It was heading towards midnight. Most were exhausted but stayed up for Lightning Bolt.

The man is jolly; always the one to crack jokes, as his body language does in his pre-race rituals.

His sense of humour always injects energy into the often dull place that is the mixed zone.

“Hey boooy,” he roared at his compatriot Yohan Blake as the youngster was being interviewed a few metres away after the 100m final.

Blake beat Bolt twice during the Jamaican Olympic trials two months ago.

“And you guys, you guys (media) buried me,” he said, laughing.

“I’m never a grumpy guy, I’m always happy.”

As much as Bolt dashes in no time, every second spent with him off the track is worth it.
