An apology to the SABC got TV and radio personality Bonang Matheba her job back.

Hlaudi Motsoeneng, SABC chief operations officer, said in a statement: “The SABC would like to welcome back Ms Matheba and accepts her apology.”

The apology comes a month after Matheba’s Metro FM contract was terminated because she had accepted an offer to host a World Cup lifestyle show on rival pay-TV channel SuperSport.

At the time, she said in a statement: “My future potential cannot be jeopardised by accepting terms that will not grow my career. I could not agree to the SABC’s blanket terms – in restricting me to work with other broadcasters even though my contract with them was on radio.”

SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said it was Bonang who first approached the SABC to discuss her contract.

He said Matheba indicated to management that she wanted to withdraw the statements she had made following the termination of her contract and that she wanted her contract to be reinstated.

Said Motsoeneng: “Our aim as broadcaster is not to destroy our talent but to nurture and help young people to grow in this challenging industry. We respect their craft and are willing to assist where we can.”

Matheba will be back on air as the host of Metro FM’s The Front Row on August 11.

She referred all queries to a spokesperson who could not immediately be reached.
