Booze board dumps socialite Uyanda

2011-07-16 17:20

Socialite and business owner Uyanda Mbuli has been axed as the the Gauteng Liquor Board’s head of communications.

Mbuli has been working for the board (that falls under the Department of Economic Development) for about three years, but her contract has not been renewed.

According to several sources who refused to be named for fear of victimisation, Mbuli “was upset about it”.

One source said: “When Uyanda left . . . she was so angry she didn’t even show up for her farewell party.”

The socialite, who is known for her fashion label Diamond Face Couture, admitted to not attending the party but said it “had nothing to do with anything”.

Mbuli said: “I left after three fulfilling years of growth . As of July 1, I’m focusing on my new role as the ambassador for Safa’s Tshwane Under-17 team.”

But former colleagues at the board claimed that she was “not a pleasant person” and “constantly . . . boasted about her fashion sense”.

Department spokesperson Mandla Sidu confirmed that Mbuli no longer worked in his department.

Mbuli has come in for severe criticism lately after a tabloid claimed she wore “fake” designer heels. The following week, the same tabloid wrote about Mbuli’s “fake” university qualification.

Mbuli responded to these allegations, saying: “These are nameless critics of my hard-earned qualifications, the shoes I wear and clothes from my label. I’ve stopped paying attention to them.”
