Boxing SA perturbed by lack of interest in women’s boxing

2014-02-06 11:27

Boxing SA (BSA) is concerned about the apathy towards women’s boxing and has called on promoters to accommodate female bouts in their tournaments.

In a statement released by the boxing body, it emerges that only 13 weight divisions out of the sport’s 17 are in place for women in SA.

Only eight of those have domestic champions.

The boxing regulator has encouraged promoters to create an opportunity for boxers to contest and fill the five vacant titles.

“Promoters are requested to consider these (female) fights for their tournaments,” said a statement by acting chief executive Loyiso Mtya.

Eastern Cape duo Noni Tenge and Unathi Myekeni are the only two female champions this country has ever produced.

But both have been disadvantaged by a lack of action, with the former being stripped of her International Boxing Federation welterweight belt in 2012 for failing to defend it within the stipulated period.
