Boy killed in school fight

An 18-year-old boy died after being hit by a baseball bat during a fight outside his school in Westonaria, west of Johannesburg, Beeld newspaper reported today.

The pupil, Louwrens Gebhart, died in hospital on Saturday after he was declared brain dead following the fight last week.

Gebhart’s uncle, Cobus Gebhart, said the captain of the school’s first rugby team was trying to intervene in a fight between another boy and an adult man outside the school grounds on Thursday around 1.30pm.

The adult man was armed with a baseball bat and was about to hit the other boy when Gebhart stepped in, trying to stop the fight.

In the process, he was hit in the head and sustained bleeding on the brain.

Police spokesperson Constable Lienkie Lefakane told Beeld that the charge against the man had been changed from assault to murder.

“We are still searching for him,” she said.

The school was not named.
