Budget: Levies to push up fuel price

2011-02-23 13:04

The general fuel levy will increase by 10 cents a litre of petrol and diesel from April 6, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced in his Budget speech today.

An increase in the Road Accident Fund levy will add another eight cents to a litre, he said.

Flying to foreign destinations would also become more expensive from October, when the departure tax on international flights will go up.

The levy on electricity generated from non-renewable and nuclear sources would increase sharply from 0.5 cents to 2.5 cents per kilowatt hour on April 1.

But this would not drive up electricity prices further as it has already been calculated into the National Energy Regulator of SA’s tariff structure, he said.
