Budler takes on Condes

Home ground advantage and title-holding status will help local man

Who will be the last man standing?

That’s the question on every boxing fan’s mind as International Boxing Organisation (IBO) minimumweight champion Hekkie “The Hexecutioner” Budler defends his title for the first time.

He takes on former International Boxing Federation (IBF) world champion Florante “The little Pacquiao” Condes from the Phillipines.

The duo is scheduled to fight in the main bout of the Nashua Super 8 tournament at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park on Saturday night.

The Filipino was a previous opponent of Nkosinathi Joyi for the IBF minimumweight title eliminator in June 2009 in East London.

In the fight, Joyi beat Condes by a wide unanimous decision with scores of 120-107, 120-107 and 119-108.

Home ground advantage and title-holding status stands Budler in good stead to win the fight in the tournament, where it is believed that “every fight is a war”.

But Condes is aiming high and is determined to beat Budler. His cornerman, Brico Santig, was quoted on boxingscene.com as saying: “It’s no easy fight but it’s also a great chance for Condes to become champion again.

"So he has been training hard.”

Budler has previously tasted victory over Condes’ countryman Juanito Ribillar in February 2010 for the IBO light flyweight title, and defeated Michael Landero in September last year for the IBO minimumweight belt.

He told City Press he is looking forward to the fight. “I am well prepared for the fight and my fitness level speaks for itself. I’m well aware of Florante’s hard punches and we’ve got a good counter-game plan for that.”

Another highly anticipated contest in the Super 8 is that of Mzonke “The Rose of Khayelitsha” Fana against Sipho “Tsunami” Taliwe for the World Boxing Council junior lightweight international title.

Fana has fought 35 fights so far in his career, winning 31 with 13 knockouts and 4 losses (1 KO). On the other side, Taliwe’s record is 15 wins (10 KOs), 2 defeats and one draw.

Some other fights featuring in the tournament include:
» Flo Simba vs Thabiso Mchunu and Danie Venter vs Zack Mwekassa – cruiserweight (10 rounds)
» Ryno Liebenburg vs Jonny Muller – IBO light heavyweight All Africa title

Golden Gloves Boxing Promotions’ Rodney Berman has promised fans they will be standing on their seats.

Kia Motors have donated a car to be raffled, which will be displayed on the night.

The winner will be announced ringside on November 10 on the final day of the Nashua Super 8 tournament at the Palace of Dreams.
