Budler triumphs over Joyi

After endless debates on who is better, Hekkie”The Hex” Budler last night emerged victorious, successfully defending his International Boxing Organisation (IBO) minimumweight belt in his scrap against Nkosinathi “Mabhere” Joyi.

After 12 rounds of sweat and exchange of punches by the two highly-rated boxers, Budler impressed two judges winning by a split decision score of 116-113, 115-113 and 112-116.

The victory takes Budler to the promised land as per Golden Gloves Promotions boss Rodney Berman’s promise of a unification world title bout come September for the winner.

As for Joyi, his career is on a slump and after years of dominance in the weight class.

He has suffered two consecutive defeats in 26 professional bouts - not good for someone who aspires to win a World Boxing Council (WBC) title.

In another world-title fight, Gideon Buthelezi was stopped in round one by Edrin Dapudong of Philippines for the IBO junior bantamweight title.

The loss subjected trainer Harold Volbrecht to a nightmare as another of his boxers, Jonny Muller, also lost in the same bill.

As boxing fans have come to know, there is never a dull moment when Ryno Liebenberg and Muller fight, and last night was no different.

In a second collision between the two, a packed Emperors Palace witnessed arguably the best scrap of the night.

In the end though, the gods of boxing smiled at Liebenberg as he was crowned the new IBO intercontinental light heavyweight champ.

Other results of the fight night:

» Paul Kamanga won a junior welterweight non-title bout by Technical Knock Out (TKO) at round six against Takalani Dandala.

» Thabang Ramagole defeated Lerato Kgole on a score of 58-54 from all judges.
