Bulls are hungry for results

When the Bulls were pushed into a position of having to qualify for the playoffs in 2007, they ransacked a hapless Reds side 92-3.

Bulls’ captain Pierre Spies was part of that side, but in a press conference today he chose to focus on their final league game against the Lions on Saturday instead.

“It would be great if we could achieve 90 points again. But it is five years on, it is a different game and a different setup. The only thing that counts is this Saturday and we will be hungry enough to get the result,” Spies said.

Bulls’ coach Frans Ludeke said the Lions have improved since embattled coach John Mitchell was suspended. He said that their Jukskei rivals have played with heart and guile.

“You can see that there is unity now. You can see in the way that they defend and attack. They like to get the ball in space. There has not been a lot of structural change. They have been effective with their pickup and drive and with their forwards going through the middle,” he said.

The Bulls have made one change to the side that lost to the Sharks 32-10 on Friday evening: Wilhelm Steenkamp comes in for the injured Flip van der Merwe.

Oft-injured flank Deon Stegmann takes Steenkamp’s place on the bench. Abrasive flank Jacques Potgieter will provide cover at lock in case of injury.

The Bulls bench has a mobile look to it with two flankers in Stegmann and CJ Stander on the bench.

Ludeke said the team’s goals have not changed, especially after losing so many experienced players last season, but they are not focusing on other results, except for what they have to achieve against the Lions.

“I can’t say that I was surprised. There has been an urgency from the players from the get-go. There was some lovely rugby at the beginning of the season but we have had some losses. Those losses got us together as a team. We still have not achieved anything for the season and we would love to have something to show for it,” he said.
