Bulls supporter is also a Soweto fan

So moved was Bulls supporter

Clint Matthews by his experience in Soweto during last week’s Super 14 match

that he is set on returning today – with a gift for the people of Soweto.

Matthews has called on all supporters to “bring and donate, in

appreciation of the warm-hearted welcome, a blanket or food parcel for the

people in need in this wonderful neighbourhood”.

This Krugersdorp resident, who had only been to Soweto once before,

said he was a bit nervous at first about taking their car into the area and

taking cameras along, fearing that they would be the target of crime.

Matthews said: “We were a bit apprehensive, but once we were in

there, it was definitely safe. No one had anything bad to say.”

On the way to the stadium “people were welcoming us and telling us

to enjoy the game and that we were welcome. I was absolutely blown away by the

warm welcome and love shown to us as guests.”

Matthews in particular remembers the greeting of a 60-year-old

woman: “She said ‘welcome to our home. We love you, enjoy your visit.’ This

brought a huge lump to my throat as clearly she was much less fortunate than I

and yet had those words to say to me.”

He said all fans were standing with locked arms and there was a

“spirit of togetherness”.

Matthews will be returning to Soweto for the rugby game today

– this time with camera in hand.

He said: “In my opinion this type of thing is better for the

country than BEE. The fact is, it drives home the true division in South Africa,

and no, not race, it is the economic imbalance.”
